How to Get the Most from AccuTerra for iPhone

With the AccuTerra for iPhone application, you can record your movements, create your own walking tours, waypoints and points of interest, save and share trails, view a profile of your track or hike, and get stats for your hikes.

With AccuTerra for iPhone, you can view a simulated hike, called a Walking Tour, in Yosemite National Park. After viewing the Walking Tour, you can also explore detailed recreation maps and locate intriguing outdoor points of interest in and around Yosemite National Park.

Walking Tour

View the Walking Tour

To experience the Walking Tour of the Pohono Trail in Yosemite National Park, Tap the Library icon in the upper-left corner, then Tap the ‘AccuTerra’ button in the lower-right portion of the screen.  Tap ‘My Yosemite Hike 2009’, then Tap the Walking Tour button.

Explore Maps

Pan

Place one finger on the screen and drag it in the direction you want to view. You can also swipe the view in any direction by flicking the screen quickly.

Zoom In

Place two fingers on the screen simultaneously and move them apart, or double tap the screen.

Place two fingers on the screen simultaneously and pinch (move) them together.

Rotate

Tap the Compass icon (upper right corner) and when the compass appears, rotate with one finger in the appropriate direction.

Turn Off Rotate

Tap the Compass icon.  Your view will remain in the direction you have set with the compass.

Reset to North-up Orientation

Tap the Compass icon again to reset to north-up orientation..

Creating Your Own Hikes, Walking Tours, and Library

AccuTerra for iPhone enables you to create your own trails, walking tours, and waypoints, and save them for future reference.

To Start a Hike

Tap the ‘Page Curl-up’ icon.  Tap Start ‘Start Recording Trek.’  A blue pin will mark your starting location.  While on your path, green pins will drop on the map to mark and track your position.

To Stop and Save a Hike

Tap the ‘Page Curl-up’ icon.  Tap ‘Stop Recording Trek’.  You will be prompted with a choice to Clear the current hike, Save the current hike, or Resume the current hike.

Clear - removes your current hike. You can start a new hike any time.

To Save Your Hike
Save - saves the current hike to your Adventures.  AccuTerra for iPhone will provide a default name, which you can change by Tapping the ‘Name’ window and renaming your hike.  AccuTerra also stores your hike according to the date and time of when you’ve saved the hike.  You can also add a ‘Story’ to this hike to help remember or share the hike.  When you’re ready to save, Tap Done, then Save.  Your hike is now in your Adventures library.

To Resume Your Hike
Resume - takes you back to your current hike, and continues to track you as you go.

Explore Maps

To See and View Your Trails

Tap the Library icon.  Your trails are shown as a list in ‘Adventures’, with the most recent on top.  Tap the > icon to see the name, details, and Story for that trail.

Your collection of saved trails and points are stored within My Library, found by Tapping the Library icon in the upper left part of the main screen.

Adventures

AccuTerra for iPhone is pre-loaded with one simulated hiking trail for demonstration purposes, named ‘My Yosemite Hike 2009’ in the Library section marked ‘Adventures’.  To see this trail, in ‘Adventures’, Tap on the AccuTerra icon in the lower-right portion of the screen.  Tap on the trail named ‘My Yosemite Hike 2009’, where you can see an example of how to create your own trails and walking tours.

My Library

View a map of a trail

After you have created and saved a trail, it will be in your ‘Adventures’ library.  To see a map of your trail, Tap the Library icon in the upper-left corner of your screen.  Tap ‘Adventures.’  Your trail will be listed.  To see your trail, Tap it and an information screen will appear.  Below the Name, Date, Type and Story of the Walking Tour, locate the section marked ‘Take Me to the Map’ and Tap ‘Show Route on Map’. AccuTerra for iPhone will take you to the location of your trail, and will appear as a blue trail within the map screen.  To see an example, Tap the trail named ‘My Yosemite Hike 2009’.

My Library

Replay a Walking Tour

Once you have created and saved a hike, you can view a Walking Tour of it at any time. 

Tap the name of Your Hike in the ‘Adventures’ library.  Below the Name, Date, Type and Story of the Walking Tour, locate the section marked ‘Take Me to the Map’ and Tap the ‘Walking Tour’ tab.  For a demonstration, Tap ‘AccuTerra’ in the lower-right portion of the screen, then Tap the trail named ‘My Yosemite Hike 2009’ and a simulated hike will be shown.  Note that the Walking Tour shows your hike and displays photos taken along the trail. The user cannot pan and zoom until the Walking Tour has been played

My Library

View Profile and Stats

Tap the name of Your Hike.  Below the Name, Date, Type and Story of the Walking Tour, locate the section marked “My Experience” and Tap the ‘Statistics and Profile’ tab. AccuTerra takes information from any saved trail and automatically generates a trail profile (distance and elevation gain/loss) and statistics for your current trail or any trail in your library. That information is displayed in two pages. Tap ‘Statistics and Profile’. The first page shows your hike statistics.  Information includes elapsed time, latitude, longitude, elevation, compass heading, average pace (in miles per hour), and distance traveled. To see your trail profile, simply swipe the screen right-to-left from the My Statistics screen, and a graph is shown depicting trail profile of elevation gain/loss over the entire distance of the trail. To return to the trail description, Tap ‘My Adventures’ in the upper-left corner. To see a demonstration, Tap ‘My Yosemite Hike 2009’, then Tap ‘Statistics and Profile’. 

Sharing your Statistics and Profiles

1. Navigate the iPhone to the screen you want to capture as an image (your Profile, or your Stats page)
2. While holding the Home button, press and release the Sleep/Wake button. Your screen will flash letting you know that the screenshot was taken.
3. Navigate to your Camera Roll library (Photos).  The most recent image should be the screencapture you’ve just created.
4. To email your image, Tap on the ‘email’ icon in the lower-left screen.  Tap on ‘email photo’, then email your image to your friends.

Places and Points

AccuTerra for iPhone is pre-loaded with pre-programmed points of interest within the coverage area of the product you have purchased.  While using AccuTerra, you may also record a Waypoint at any time.

Points of Interest and Waypoints

Tap the Library icon.  In the top Navigation Bar, Tap ‘Places and Points’.  This takes you to an alphabetized list of points of interest within your area of coverage.  You can find the point you want by scrolling (swiping down) the screen.  You can also search for a point of interest using the Search window, located above the list of saved points.  Type the first letters of the point of interest you want to find, and a list of points is shown matching your query. To view AccuTerra pre-loaded ‘Places and Points’, Tap the ‘AccuTerra’ button in the lower-right portion of the screen.  A list of places and points of interest for your area is shown.

Waypoint Information

To view information about a point of interest, Tap on the title of that point of interest, and bring up information about that point of interest in the My Points screen.

Show Waypoint on Map

To show a point of interest on the map, Tap “Show point on map”.  AccuTerra will center your map on that point of interest.

Record a Waypoint

Tap the ‘Page Curl-up’ icon in the lower-right of the map screen, and Tap Record Waypoint.  The Waypoint Pin is automatically placed in the center of the map screen. To place the pin in a different location, drag the pin to that location, then Tap Save Waypoint.  You can then name that Waypoint, or use the default name that is supplied.  You can also add a description of that Waypoint in the Story box.  To save the Waypoint to your library, Tap Save.

Settings and Preferences

AccuTerra Settings

Tap the Page Curl-up icon on the lower-right portion of the map screen.  Tap ‘Options.’ 

GPS

Set your Default Activity (Hike, Bike, or Drive).  This option enables you to set the number of waypoints that are dropped according to distance and time traveled. Setting ‘Hike’ as your default will drop the most waypoints per mile traveled, and setting ‘Drive’ as your default will set the least waypoints per mile traveled.

In the GPS section you can also set your default units of elevation to English or Metric (feet/miles, or meters/kilometers). 

Speed/Pace
The speed/pace is automatically set to miles per hour.

Adventure Milestone Chime
The Adventure Milestone Chime rings and buzzes when you’ve achieved a given distance.  For instance, if you would like to be notified when you reach 1/4 mile, Tap the ‘1/4 mile’, setting and you will be buzzed/chimed every quarter mile.  This is a great way for you to measure your distance as you go.

AccuTerra

The AccuTerra Option enables you to set your Walking Tour Speed (the speed at which your Walking Tour replays).

Default Reply to E-mail
If you would like to have a default recipient for email, input the email address here.

Map Legend

To see the Legend, Tap the Legend section.  A list of symbols and types of trails that are shown on the map are displayed with their corresponding labels.

Help

To get Help, Tap the Help bar to see a complete Help section.
